Study skills are essential to all learners, but especially to exceptional learners. These skills should be taught explicitly to ensure that all learners are equipped to move forward in their education. The term "applied academics" refers to the application of school-taught subjects to life outside school, and especially adult life. This concept is also known as "functional academics." Functional academics can be infused into the subjects to which they relate, or taught in a separate course. The chart below identifies ways in which the five core subjects of academics apply to exceptional learners in the so-called "real world."
